Let the games begin
The 2025 lawn bowling season is about to begin! We have our usual schedule of informal and
formal games and tournaments. Here’s how things look as we start out our season. The
schedule will likely evolve as the season rolls along with additional games and tournaments.
President’s Welcome Back Tournament – Saturday, May 3
Our first rolling of the bowls can happen during this Saturday event (weather and greens
permitting). The event will feature two games of 10-12 ends, that could be made up of pairs or
triples, depending on the turnout. Players should arrive by 9:30am so we can organize players
into teams. The first game will start at 10am. There will be a brief lunch break. Please bring your
own food or snacks. The second game will begin after lunch. The bar and patio will be open so
we can socialize and meet each other again after a long winter break.
Social Bowls this season
Social Bowls returns this season at its usual time slots – Monday, Wednesday and Friday
mornings starting at 10am, and Sunday afternoons starting at 1pm. The first games begin the
week of Sunday, May 4. This is for people who want to come as individuals and play with
others. Games are often in pairs or triples, and run about 10-12 ends. We will not be using the
online Sign Up system for registration for Social Bowls, instead participants will need to be
present at the Clubhouse at least 15 minutes prior to start in order for the drawmasters to have
time to assign players to teams. Anyone who comes late may need to play on their own.
Evening Leagues this season
Mondays – For players new to the sport, we offer a seven week Novice League starting Monday,
May 12 at 7pm. Each session will include some instruction, and then opportunity to play various
forms of the game so that newcomers can get comfortable with eventually joining in with the
other leagues and social bowling opportunities. Shannon Ross Watson and John Pater will
provide instruction and direct the games for this league.
Tuesdays – An informal league or perhaps a version of social bowls will occur on Tuesday
evenings starting at 7pm. Players can show up each of these evenings, and types of games will
be decided depending on attendance. Players are also welcome to come and play on their own
if they prefer. Roy Riege is the lead organizer for these evening games. The Edmonton Sport
and Social Club (ESSC) will be using a complete green on these evenings as well (14 teams of 4),
so there will be lots of energy on the greens.
Thursdays – A more formal Pairs League will run on Thursday evenings starting at 7pm. Players
interested can sign up as individuals or teams of two; we will find partners for those who come
as singles. All those interested should plan to attend the first day – Thursday, May 8 – when
teams and competition can be assigned. Players can commit for 5 week sessions that will run
from May into September. Roy Riege is the lead organizer for these evening games. Players are
also welcome to come and play on their own if they prefer. The Edmonton Sport and Social
Club (ESSC) will be using a half-green on these evenings as well (8 teams of 4).
Wednesdays and Fridays – there is interest by some members to run additional evening games.
We are in conversation with neighbouring Community Leagues on a possible Friday evening
league starting at the end of May. A number of members are working on the logistics for this
new Friday evening possibility. We welcome other members who would like to plan a
Wednesday evening set of games. Please contact our new Bowls Director, Grant Schneider, if
you are interested in playing a leadership role in these additional bowls nights.
Croquet update
We will give croquet a try for another season. Those interested in this sport can join us on
Tuesday evenings from 7-9pm. We are hoping those who are interested can take a leadership
role in running the croquet games on these nights.
